Profile of Amnicon soil. This soil is high in clay, resulting in shrinking and swelling with changing soil moisture contents; the cracks are a result of shrinking from dessication. In the last 10,000 years the soil forming processes have resulted in: a mineral layer enriched with organic matter from 0 to 4 inches; and a layer with accumulated clay from 4 to 66 inches with the top 12 inches of this layer experiencing additional leaching of clay. Depth is marked in inches.
