Ortstein occurs in nearly continuous cemented horizontal layers in several soils in the MLRA. These layers are 25 millimeters (1 inch) or more thick at depths of 25 to 75 centimeters (10 to 30 inches). The cementing agent is a chemical complex of iron and organic matter leached from the soil layers above the ortstein.
